Social degrowth economy is possible

After the first night we had spent in our North-Eastern Caravan we woke up at a Wagenplatz in Leipzig-West. We had our first outdoor breakfast followed by the meeting with two members of staff (Nina and Johannes) of Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie (http://www.konzeptwerk-neue-oekonomie.org/). It is quite a young organisation founded in 2011 which filled out a niche – the Konzeptwerk combined the function of a scientific think tank dealing with ways to get out of the economic growth and to also highlight social issues and concerns on that way. Therefore they invented the textbook „Endlich Wachstum“ to spread the ideas and discussion right at the (young) grass root level. Due to the high demand a 2nd edition will be published later this year.

Nina, from Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie is also one of the main organisors of the next De-growth conference due to take place in Leipzig from September 2.-6. this year. The De-growth conference will be organised along three thematic streams: organising society, building the social and ecological economy and living conviviality. More than 2000 participants and speakers from all over the world are expected to convene in Leipzig in September.

As Nina and Johannes explained, the founding idea of the organisation Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie occured to them as a result of their former experiences in the NGO field. There was a huge lack of those who would focus on social economy and ecology movement at the same time. So they decided to start their own organisation.
